Restore a SharePoint backup without checking the farm build number

In previous article, I have explained How to resolve this error

Your backup is from a different version of Microsoft SharePoint Foundation and cannot be restored

restore

In this hint, I will show a new workaround to restore a SharePoint backup without checking the build number on the farm. (Note: I advise to apply this solution only on a DEV/TEST environment)

Steps:

As shown before,I used Restore-SPSite with backup extension .bak , and In following steps I will go back to use STSADM with backup extension .dat.

  • Open Command prompt as farm account.
  • Navigate to the following path
cd C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\14\BIN
  • On Source farm > Backup your site via
STSADM.EXE -o backup -url http://server/site -filename backup.dat
  • Copy the backup file to destination farm.
  • Open Command prompt as farm account.
  • Navigate to the following path.
cd C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\14\BIN
  • On the destination farm, Restore the backup
STSADM.EXE -o restore -url http://server/site -filename backup.dat -overwrite

The site backup should be now restored successfully.

Enjoy 🙂
