SharePoint Permission Mode Vs Project Server Permission Mode in Project Server 2013

  2. What’s the difference between Project Server Permission Mode and SharePoint Permission Mode?

1. What is the Permission Mode in Project Server?

  • Project Server has two permission mode:
    • SharePoint Permission Mode.(Default)
    • Project Server Permission Mode.

2. What’s the difference between Project Server Permission Mode and SharePoint Permission Mode?

  • Project Server Permission Mode is a flexible mechanism that
    • Enables to set permissions of users to Project Server objects by managing users, groups, and categories.
    • Project Sever administrator may fully customize the groups and categories setting, and also may create additional groups and categories.
    • This permissions mode is used on previous Project Server versions.
  • Project Server 2013 users have two different types of permissions
    • Global permissions:
      • Allow users to use and access sites and features in Project Server 2013.
    • Category permissions:
      • Allows users to do tasks with project, resources, and views in Project Server 2013.
  • Project Server permissions consideration/tips, 
    • Do not associate a user to a category.
    • Do not define Global Permissions to a user.
    • Do not set Global Permissions to a user.
    • Avoid the use of Deny.
    • Start configuring the permissions based on default settings.

  • SharePoint Permission Mode is a simple mechanism that suitable for organizations that find Project Server permissions mechanism hard to implement, or for those who are well acquainted with SharePoint permissions administration.
    • By default, Project server activates SharePoint Permission mode. where you could note that  PWA settings do not show the Security Section as shown belowsharepoint-permission-mode-pwa-settings
    • To can manage Project Server Permission via SharePoint mode, you should go to site settings > People and Groups.sharepoint-permission-mode
    • Global permissions are managed by association of users to predefined SharePoint permission groups with associated categories:
      • Administrator.
      • Portfolio Managers.
      • Portfolio Viewers.
      • Project Managers.
      • Resource Managers.
      • Team Leads.
      • Team Members.
    • Permissions to projects sites and resources are granted by associating the user to one of the 3 predefined groups, which are created automatically per project site (a specific project):
      • Visitors – reflects read only privileges.
      • Members – reflects Team Member privileges.
      • Owners – reflects Project Manager privileges.
  • SharePoint permissions Mode consideration/tips, 
    • You cannot edit the default permissions assigned to any of these SharePoint groups.
    • You cannot create additional custom groups, categories, Resource Breakdown Structure (RBS) nodes, or edit the default permissions assigned to any of these objects.
    • Delegates cannot be used.

3. How to switch between Project Server Permission Mode and SharePoint Permission Mode?

To switch from SharePoint Mode to Project Server Mode, you should run the following cmdlet via SharePoint Management Shell (Run As Administrator.)

Set-SPPRojectPermissionMode -Url 'PWA URL' -AdministratorAccount 'domain\adminaccount' -Mode ProjectServer

Example:

Set-SPPRojectPermissionMode -Url http://epm/pwa -AdministratorAccount epmsys\spfarm -Mode ProjectServer

The result of running this cmdlet is showing the Security section within the PWA Settings.

To switch from Project Server Permission Mode to SharePoint Permission Mode, you should run the following cmdlet via running SharePoint Management Shell as administrator.

Set-SPPRojectPermissionMode -Url 'PWA URL' -AdministratorAccount 'domain\adminaccount'  -Mode SharePoint

4. What’s the effect of switching to specific mode?

If the SharePoint Mode has been activated and you intend to switch to Project Server Permission Mode, you should keep in mind that all SharePoint Permission Mode configurations settings will be removed and vice versa.
