Restrict Project site creation to the default site collection in Project Server 2013

I have been provisioned a PWA Instance “https://epm.gov.sa/PWA ” within a web application ” https://epm.gov.sa ” in Project Server 2013, When I created a new project within Project Center, and I navigated to its Project Site.

Open Project Site

I found out that the project site was created below the main web application ” https://epm.gov.sa ” that should be created below the site collection ” https://epm.gov.sa/pwa ” as shown below.

project site create below web application not site collection

I am going to PWA Settings > Below Operational Policies > Connected SharePoint Site.

Connected SharePoint Site

I found out the Site address was created below web application directly.

Connected Project Site

I tried to delete the connected project site by clicking on DELETE SITE then I tried to create it again, by clicking on CREATE SITE, but unfortunately, SITE URL is blank as shown below.

Create Project Site in Connected Project Site

Cause :

This problem usually occurs because of the Project Site Provisioning Settings is not perfectly configured to set the Site URL value.

Project Site Provisioning Settings 2

Solution:

  • Open Central Administration > General Settings > Manage PWA.

Manage PWA Settings

  • Below Operational Policies > Click on Project Site Provisioning Settings.

Project Site Provisioning Settings

  • Beside Site URL > Checks the Site URL text box that should be blank.

Project Site Provisioning Settings 2

  • In Site URL type the Instance name. (In my case it’s PWA)
  • Make sure that the Restrict Project site creation to the default site collection is Checked.
  • Go back to create a new project that should be now created below PWA instance.
  • Again Check the Site URL in Connected SharePoint Site that should be assigned to the assigned instance name.

The previous steps will be applied for all new sites, but What about the old created site that can’t be deleted to provision them again with the new URL ?!

Fortunately,  the Bulk Update Connected SharePoint Sites will provide a bulk Site URL update for all old created sites, To do that follow the mentioned steps below:

  • Open Central Administration > General Settings > Manage PWA.

Manage PWA Settings

  • Below Operational Policies > Click on Bulk Update Connected SharePoint Sites.
  • Set the path URL of the previous site and New Site.

Bulk Update Connected SharePoint Sites

  • Check The Update Content Types setting to ensure that the content types of Project Issues, Risks, and Documents are updated in the new location so that item links remain functional.
  • Check The Project Site Permissions setting to synchronize permissions to the Project Sites while updating the site paths, this allows users to access their project sites immediately.

Enjoy 🙂
